Suit: Suit of Wands
Card Type: Minor Arcana
Tarot Element: Fire
Star Sign: Leo
Planet: Mars
Angel: Archangel Raphael
Key Meaning: Don’t Give Up
The Seven of Wands often appears when you are experiencing some sort of struggle in life. The key meaning is not to give up and, occasionally, stand your ground.
Number Seven Meaning In Tarot
All sevens, including the Seven of Cups, Seven of Pentacles and Seven of Swords indicate an opportunity for personal growth. As Wands relate to action – it means personal growth comes at this time, by not running away from a challenge. Your challenge could be an emotional struggle, a legal struggle, or problems dealing with other people for example. In some instances, you may need to resist the temptation to bend to social pressure, and instead stand up for your beliefs.
While the Five of Wands tarot card guides you to fight for what you want, the Seven of Wands is the next step on your path. It suggests that you may need to defend what you have already built. Or, you are competing at an even higher level again.

Seven of Wands Description
This description is based on the Rider Waite Tarot Deck. The balance of forces against you at this time is considerable. This card shows you fighting with one big wand against a whole host of other wands. Notice the man in the picture has a slight advantage in that he is standing above the crowd.
He has the higher ground and thus has a small advantage. What exactly you are fighting at this time, will be unique to you. It could be you are battling other people’s opinions, or negative thoughts you hold about yourself. Alternatively, the battle could be very real – you could be facing obstacles on many fronts. Either way, this card reminds you that the outcome you dream of attaining, is within reach.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: What does this Card Mean as Feelings?
It can be scary to be yourself in a conformist society. The Seven of Wands reflects this battle. Perhaps you want to ‘break-out’, and express yourself in some way. Daring to be different, even begging to differ, requires a sense of purpose and a fighting spirit. Once you have a sense of purpose, just be prepared to battle. Obstacles however, are not meant to act as a permanent barrier, but are there rather to help you develop a thicker skin. You will need that skin if you plan to rise above the ordinary.
LOVE: What does The 7 of Wands Mean when You Ask About Love?
When the Seven of Wands turns up in a love reading, the meaning will depend on whether or not you are in a relationship.
💖 If you asked will I find love? – then this card does not predict meeting someone. However, it does suggest that your competition (other women or men), are jealous of you. They think you are very attractive and won’t be single for long more. It is just a matter of timing. Perhaps you have worked hard to get to this point, where you feel confident and beautiful. If so, well done you. Your efforts are paying off.
💖 In a relationship, this card can mean you need to stand your ground. Perhaps your partner is being too controlling, and you need to push back a little more.
💖 You may be feeling defensive around your partner’s family and friends. Perhaps they are being judgmental about you. The best course of action here, is to be yourself, and don’t allow them to knock your confidence. You may lose a few battles, but you will win the war.
💖 In an argument with a lover or friend, this card means that you have the moral high ground. Trust that you are in the right.
CAREER: What does This Card Signify when You Ask About Work?
If your question relates to work, business, career or study and you receive the 7 of Wands, then the guidance is:
⭕ Stand out from the crowd at work, or in your business. Avoid doing what everyone else is doing by staying in the ‘safe zone’. You have some good ideas, but don’t expect people to notice them without you making an effort to show them off. Yes, this may require you to take a few risks – although what we usually fear the most is being embarrassed.
⭕ If you want a new job or promotion, you will need to compete for it. The Seven of Wands, comes after the Six of Wands, the card of victory and confidence. Your increasing confidence and how you project yourself, is your biggest asset right now.
⭕ If you are considering switching courses at college, or quitting altogether – the guidance is to finish what you started. Don’t give up, even if it is difficult.
Jobs associated with the 7 of Wands include: law, sales, real estate and research & development.
MONEY: What is the Meaning of The Seven of Wands in a Money Reading?
💲 If you asked the Tarot about money and finances, and you receive the 7 of Wands, it means you should consider taking steps to safeguard your future. This may mean, putting a savings plan or pension in place. It could also mean making it a priority to buy a property rather than renting. The advice here, is that it is better to be on the property ladder, even if you can’t buy exactly what you want at this stage.
💲 In a legal situation, you are guided to stand your ground and defend yourself.

TIMING: Does The 7 of Wands Predict any Particular Timeframe?
🕔 The Seven of Wands is only a timing indication when you specifically asked a timeframe question. For example, if you want to know if something will happen, and when, then you need to draw two separate cards. These are in fact, two separate questions. This is a fundamental principle to understand if you want an accurate tarot reading – and it is core to my teaching in my book Tarot in 5 Minutes.
🕔 Using my timing method, the 7 of Wands is about 7 weeks. If the card is reversed, timing will be slightly longer – so up to 10 weeks.
Karina’s Timing Method:
Swords are days. Wands are weeks. Cups are months and Pentacles are years. Please note this is my personal timing method. Feel free to adopt it (or not).
What is the Meaning of The Seven of Wands Reversed?
When the 7 of Wands is reversed then the wand falls out of your hand, and your protection slips away.
✔️ You walk away from a fight or situation. This may be good, if you are in the wrong. That said, I suggest you do some soul searching to ensure that you are not just walking away out of fear.
✔️You are choosing to work in a less competitive area. Perhaps this is a lifestyle choice, or you simply can’t handle the stress.
✔️ You are lowering your defences. This may be a good thing, depending on the situation. However, it can also mean, that you are ‘giving in’ to a stronger will, against your better judgement.
✔️Other keywords associated a reversal include: Selling out, surrender, hesitation and intimidation.
