Queen of Cups Description

This description is based on the Rider Waite Tarot Deck. A queen sits on a throne at the edge of a seashore. There is a dreamlike quality to this image, we are not sure if the scene is real or imagined. The Queen gazes into a cup, with a deep, trance-like expression. She is scrying, looking for answers and divining the future. Notice that the cup is closed, signifying that her thoughts are in the realm of the hidden world.

Queen court cards indicate your potential at any given time. The Queen of Cups means you have the potential at this time, to develop your emotional and spiritual life. In comparison, the Queen of Wands rules creative life, the Queen of Swords rules intellectual life and the Queen of Pentacles concerns physical life.

How Are Aces Different To Queens?

While both Aces and Queens represent potential, there is a difference. Aces represent events outside of you, like opportunities coming towards you. The Ace of Cups, for example, could be a new lover or a new area of study. Queens on the other hand, represents potential within you worthy of exploring. In the case of the Queen of Cups, this could represent healing abilities, or the unfolding of some natural talent. Usually an Ace will appear around the same time as a Queen in your reading. In other words, when you are ready, the opportunities appear.

Queen of Cups Personality Traits

When the Queen refers to a person, she is attractive with expressive eyes and a warm smile. She can be creative, and is a good listener and carer. Careers in the arts, design, healing or home are most attractive to her. This Queen often has a mystic and mediumistic side. She lives close to the veil of subconsciousness, where dreams and visions emerge. You could say she has one foot in this world and one foot in the other. Her inner musings and trances take her places, most of us will never envision. What this Queen has to say, is worth listening to. Her astrological sun or rising sign is Pisces, Scorpio or Cancer. If you are this Queen, then you will have a strong desire to live near water, because water soothes your soul.

TIMING: Does The Queen of Cups Predict any Particular Timeframe?

🕔 The Queen of Cups is only a timing indication when you specifically asked a timeframe question. For example, if you want to know if something will happen, and when, then you need to draw two separate cards. These are in fact, two separate questions. This is a fundamental principle to understand if you want an accurate tarot reading – and it is core to my teaching in my book Tarot in 5 Minutes.

🕔 Using my timing method, the Queen of Cups is about 13 months. If the card is reversed, timing will be slightly longer – so up to 20 months.

Karina’s Timing Method:
Swords are days. Wands are weeks. Cups are months and Pentacles are years. Please note this is my personal timing method. Feel free to adopt it (or not).

What is the Meaning of The Queen of Cups Reversed?

When the Queen of Cups is reversed then the water is a little rough and the tide is coming in too fast.

✔️ You may be stressing and worrying about things over which you have no control. It could be that you are emotionally out of balance and not seeing things clearly. It is time to relax, ideally through meditation so that you can recharge your emotional batteries. Try not to overreact to events. Remember, this phase too shall pass.

✔️ This Queen is by nature trusting, with a great capacity for forgiveness. When the card is reversed it means her trust has been betrayed and this can lead to resentment and a shutting down. A sense of helplessness and a victim mentality could rob her of her gifts.

✔️ Feeling cursed. However, any unfortunate phase should pass in time. If a ‘cursed’ phase lasts a long time, then consider it may be that you keep making bad choices.

✔️Other keywords associated a reversal include: illusion, emotional vampire, melodrama and gullible.
