How Do You Bless a New Tarot Deck?
So, what should you do when you first get a Tarot deck? The first action should be to bless your deck. In so doing, you are performing the act of deck consecration.
In effect, the purpose of a blessing is to help you bond and connect with your cards. It also sets your intention to work in the Light, and with good energy. Finally, the act of blessing provides a way to introduce yourself to your Tarot deck.
Step 1: Bless Your Cards
First, fan the cards out in front of you. Next, pass your hand along the cards while expressing words of gratitude out-loud. I suggest the following gratitude blessings, choose whichever feels right for you.
Prayers and Affirmations
- Thank you for being my guide long into the future.
- Welcome my companion, friend and guide.
- I look forward to your guidance for many years to come.
- Thank you for being my guide and showing me the Light.
Step 2: Cleansing Your Cards
It is important to cleanse your Tarot deck regularly, however the initial cleanse is probably the most important one you will perform. Basically, the first cleansing is meant to rid the cards of any negative energy they may have collected from the store or factory of origin.
The most powerful method of cleansing Tarot cards is smudging. Smudging is the act of burning herbs to create ritualized smoke for spiritual and psychic cleansing. Significantly, the act of smudging has its roots in paganism and witchcraft.
Smudging your deck will mystically consecrate your cards. In order to smudge your cards, simply waft your smudge stick over your cards. As you do so, draw an imaginary figure of eight in the air, the symbol of infinity. At the same time, recite one or more of the blessings above.
Alternatively, if you are using an incense stick or cone, pass your cards several times through the smoke. As you do so, trace the figure of infinity with the cards.

How Do You Energize New Tarot Cards?
The act of consecrating your cards will clear your deck of stagnant energy. Essentially, now your cards are in neutral position, and are waiting to blend with your energy.
The final step of the process is to charge the cards with your energy. Consider this a twin-flame moment, where both of your souls become blended and intertwined forever.
Moon and Sunlight Energy
To energize your cards, leave your cards on a windowsill for 24 hours to absorb both moon and sunlight. Ideally, choose a day and night with less clouds in the sky. Some readers like to charge their cards on a full moon, but personally I don’t think it matters too much where the moon is in its cycle.
I recommend you leave the cards on a windowsill in a room where you spend much of your time. The reason being, whichever room you spend a lot of your time, will be imprinted with your essence. For most people, this is the bedroom.
