What Is A Blue Moon? The Three Types of Blue Moons
A Blue Moon is when there is an additional full moon within a calendar month. Typically there is one full moon and one new moon in each calendar month, but occasionally there will be additional full or new moon.
1. Calendrical Blue Moon
When there is a second full moon, it is called a Monthly Blue Moon or Calendrical Blue Moon. If there is a second new moon, it is called a Black Moon.
There are about 29.5 days between full moons, making it unusual for two full moons to squeeze into a 30- or 31-day calendar month. The first full moon would have to be very early in the month.
February only has 28 days and so, will never have a Blue Moon. A rare occurrence is when February has no new or full moon, and this happens every 19 or 20 years.
2. Seasonal Blue Moon
An older, traditional definition of a Blue Moon is where a season which typically has three full moons, has a fourth full moon. This is called a Seasonal Blue Moon, and according to NASA, this occurs every two and a half years. The next Seasonal Blue Moon occurs on August 19, 2024.
3. Astrological Blue Moon
This is when there are two full moons in one solar month. Astrological blue moons are the rarer kind, occurring once in every two and a half to three years.
How To Use a Blue Moon For Manifestation
You’ve heard the expression – “once in a blue moon?” Well, that’s what this moon delivers! A Blue Moon is like a regular full moon on steroids – it’s power is amplified. That is why it is really good to light an Intention Candle or perform a full moon ritual on a Blue Moon. If you enjoy manifestation meditations or practicing Law of Attraction, it’s worth knowing when the next Blue Moon is to set your intentions on that date.
A Blue Moon can also help to clarify any lingering decisions you have, from changing jobs, moving house or leaving an unhappy relationship. It may feel like a light bulb going off in your head, and the path ahead is suddenly illuminated. The Blue Moon helps you see why you were putting off decisions, and gives you that once in a Blue Moon chance to change things.
Is a Blue Moon Actually Blue in Color?
No, a Blue Moon isn’t actually blue, although sometimes it can appear slightly blue depending on the particles in the atmosphere. For instance volcanic eruptions or large fires can release particles into the atmosphere which can give the moon a bluish tinge.
